Hickory’s enrollment of 1,173 makes it the smallest school in Class 5. The latest enrollment numbers would have dropped Hickory from Class 5 to Class 4, but the Chesapeake school appealed to remain in Class 5, and that appeal was approved by the VHSL. Highland Springs lost in the 2020 championship game to Stone Bridge in overtime. Highland Springs won the Class 5 football title last season with a 33-19 victory over Maury, and the Springers also won four consecutive Class 5 crowns from 2015 through 2018. The plan begins with the upcoming school year and runs through 2026-27. The VHSL’s latest alignment plan was approved in September by the league’s Executive Committee, and it was finalized last week after final appeals. The Springers have been placed in Region A, joining the trio of Hampton Roads schools along with Grassfield and Richmond-area schools Cosby, Deep Run, Glen Allen, Manchester, Meadowbrook and Thomas Dale. Highland Springs, a football powerhouse in Class 5 for the past decade, moves to Class 6 for the 2023-24 school year.
